Something different - A View on RAAM.

RAAM Staff
The RAAM Staff is composed of several groups. The primary group which focuses on the race year round is the Executive Staff. We have Key Staff which help us throughout the year with various pieces. Finally, during the race we have dozens of people who help in various capacities from Officials to Time Station Staff to Headquarters. We are grateful for all the support we get!

Executive Team

Fred Boethling - President/CEO
Fred is a Boulder, Colorado, based ultra-cyclist. Fred is President/CEO of CapSource Financial Inc., a company engaged in the business of selling and leasing over-the-road truck trailers and related equipment. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he has been involved in a variety of businesses over a 40-year business career. Fred has written articles and produced films covering a wide range of outdoor adventure including mountaineering, skiing, cave exploration, and ultra-cycling. Fred is married and has two grown children. He's a cancer survivor and is active in social, cultural, and philanthropic pursuits. Fred raced 2-Person in 2005 and became the oldest solo finisher at age 61 in 2006.

Terry Zmrhal - Race Director
Terry brings a diverse background of software development, massage therapy, ultracycling, and cycling event organization. His Ultracycling career began in earnest in 1992 and he's been going strong ever since, including a 2-Person Team RAAM finish in 2002. He's organized over 100 bike events including bike tours, Team in Training, training rides, brevets, and helped found Northwest Crank and the Cascade 1200. After 12 years as a software developer, he has extensive training as a massage therapist to understand the body. Shortly thereafter he switched over to the current position as Race Director.

Perry Stone - VP, Public Relations, Sales and Marketing
Perry's enthusiasm for RAAM is long-lived. He was on the first two-person to complete RAAM in 1997. In addition he has a strong resume of ultracycling including trans-Australia records. More recently he has covered the race on the media aspect and was instrumental in the quicker race coverage in 2007. His writing is exceptional and brings a strong picture of the realities of the race. His enthusiasm will strength our media and sponsorship.

Rick Boethling - VP of Finance
Rick earned a bachelors degree from the University of Colorado - Boulder, with graduate studies, in finance and law, in London, Italy and San Diego. He brings a 10 year background as a small business owner. An athlete at heart, Rick has climbed 60+, 14,000 foot peaks in several countries. He also, cycles, runs, skis, adventure races and plays hockey. Between events he finds time for his other passions collecting books and records (yes, LPs), traveling, cuisine and, of course, his wife Sylvia.

Key Staff

Johnny Boswell - Head Official Trio
Johnny is a long time fan of RAAM having first seen it on the Wide World of Sports in the mid-eights. He started with RAAM 2001 as a Time Station Captain in Kosciusko Mississippi. (Thanks for the fireworks Johnny!) He stepped up from there and has been escorting racers across the country with his wife Maureen for the past 5 years. He is a native of Mississippi but divide time now between Mississippi and Texas. He's also a cycling having finished Furnace Creek and the Texas Time Trials. He believes RAAM is the most incredible bike race in the world and I am proud to be a part of the prestigious event.

Mike Roark - Head Official Trio
Mike hails from Fallbrook, CA, and has been with the RAAM family longer than almost anyone. He has officiated for RAAM or for RAAM Qualifiers since 1985. For several years Mike was a course Marshall for Ironman Kona and from 1993-1995 he served as the Marshals Director. Mike and his wife Cindy traditionally watch the back of the pack and many stories are told by those of their support and encouragement to the very end.

Robb Warren - Head Official Trio
No one has a longer history with RAAM than Robb Warren. He's been involved since the first race in 1982. He has done everything from being a key staff for the Race Director, to routes, to Officiating. Few people know more about making the race work than Robb. He breaks away from his busy job at Amgen for a couple weeks every summer to escort the amazing athletes across the country safely.

David Glade - Technical Director
David's experience with ultracycling extends back to the early 1980s including Bicycle Across Missouri. He has more than 20 years of experience with computers and building up systems. He is the architect behind the new online database and Online Registration System. David continues to race today, though mostly triathlons - the double and triple ironmans now.

Gene Fourney - Technical Director
The Fourney name may seem familiar, and it is because Gene is Bob's brother (Bob raced in the 1990s). Gene brings more than 10 years of reliable internet hosting and development to the team. Gene and his team are bringing the new website to life with great appeal and easy navigation.

Paul Stern - National Time Station Manager
Paul understands big races having been the Head Official with World Triathlon Championships awhile back. He left a legacy of many trained officials. He was an early Ironman veteran from 1987 as well. These days he has done a few brevets with hopes of PBP in the future. A former teacher, he now spends four months of the year buried in tax paperwork as a tax accountant, the rest is free time!

Barbara Franklin - Headquarters Manager

Peter Moffett - Route Designer (and GPS Magician)
Peter became hooked on RAAM after seeing the ABC coverage in 1984. He's crewed for many of the greats since 1985 including Rob Kish, Gerry Tatrai, Bob Fourney, Rob Templin, and most recently Ben Courtier. He attempted to retire after 2005, but he is back using his vast knowledge of RAAM routes and his meticulous detail to put together the RAAM Route. Few know more about GPS and computers with RAAM than Peter who started using them in 1988.

Paul Zbiek - Finish Line Manager
Paul has competed and placed in a number of UMCA events. In the process he has raised over $100,000 for charitable causes. He guides the finish line to ensure that each racer is treated as a champion. He is employed as a geography professor at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, a job that allows him to simultaneously ride his bicycle and study the land.
