Team Backup UK for Cancer has a Patron in Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson
11 times Paralympic Gold medallist and London Marathon winner Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE is supporting Team Backup UK for Cancer to ride the extra mile for charity.  Tanni, who is the team’s Patron, said of one of the racers, Andy Griffin:

"When I was seriously training 30 mile sessions were some of the most gruelling for me, so the thought that Andy, who only took part in his first triathlon in 2005 after rigorous cancer treatment, is going to attempt [Ed as a 4-man team] to cycle over 3000 miles across America in 9 days is awe-inspiring.   Andy is proof that if you have the belief and determination you can achieve whatever you attempt. Good luck to Andy and Team Backup UK."

Team Backup UK is hoping to raise over £10,000 in aid of Cancerbackup, which is the only national charity that specialises in providing information on all types of cancer.   Its services are free to cancer patients, their relatives and friends.

Cancerbackup’s website has more than 200,000 visitors from The USA per month, constantly outstripping visitors from the UK, which accounts for around 40% of all visitors.

John Jurczynski Cycle Mania

The last two years has seen several RAAM athletes doing some very long indoor rides. 2007 RAAM veteran John Jurczynski is doing his own.

Beginning on Monday, December 10th, I will be taking part in another fundraising spinning session. This one, to take place at the Laconia Athletic and Swim Club, will benefit the WLNH Children's Auction. There will be two of us trying to set a new Guinness World Record for indoor spinning. The current record is up to 111 hours. If you would like to get involved with this "Cycle Mania" you can do so by spinning with us during the first 60 hours (just to keep us awake), or by becoming a member of a fundraising relay team and spin segments of the last 50+ hours with us. For more information on this event, click here.

Also, Tammy Levesque, from The Fitness Edge in Meredith, is putting together 3 relay teams. If you want to spin for an hour or more on one of her teams just send her an e-mail fitnessedge@metrocast.net or give her a call at 279-0411.

Fund Setup on Behalf of Mike Janelle

One of RAAM's veterans, Mike Janelle died unexpectedly on Friday November 23rd, 2007. Mike has been on the Beaver Creek Team the past three years. The RAAM Management Team expresses our deep condolences to Mike's wife and his family. He will be missed. This article from Vail Daily has more details.

We attended the memorial service in Colorado and it was a touching expression of his life, his enthusiasm for cycling and his family, and a tribute to his influence on those around him. Some memories are here.

A fund has been set up by his teammates and friends to support his wife, Maribel, and their unborn bay. The address for the fund is: Mike Janelle Memorial Fund, c/o 1st Bank of Avon, PO Box 5270, Avon, CO 81620.

Chews Caps One Million Kilometers

RAAM Veteran and Champion, Danny Chew has eclipsed one million kilometers of lifetime cycling on his way to his goal of one million miles. Congratulations to Danny! Here's his report:

59 miles into a 101 mile ride on a beautiful Western Pennsylvania Autumn day. At age 45, I was on County Line Rd. in Lawrence County East of New Castle with my longtime friend Jonathan Pratt. A million kilometers is 621,371 miles. It is roughly 25,000 miles around the Earth at the Equator, I have ridden the equivalent of around the world 25 times with 15 more times needed to reach a million miles. Allowing for decrease in mileage with age, I predict I should ride my millionth mile by age 70 in the year 2,032.
